Recently, the trend JBL Aquaristik proposes on the market a new food; the JBL Plankton Pur.
This new food could integrate soon food rations distributed by aquarist who love discus.
Real alternative to’live food and frozen food, JBL Plankton Pur have indeed a large number of nutritional interest for our discus…
JBL Plankton Pur, Food from the north
Developed by a Norwegian biologist, JBL Plankton Pur is born from aquaculture researches dedicated to the Calanus plankton . SP.
It turns out that this plankton present in large quantities in the cold waters of Norway has amazing virtues. Collected with precautionary approach (Dixit JBL Aquaristik), the Calanus finmarchicus essentially made up of JBL pure plankton size M (95%).
Once collected, This plankton is treated in a manner that allows to give up the use of preserving agents. No more informations on this side!
An alternative to frozen and live food
Thanks to a process with an effective conservation, the plankton pur is composed of plankton rich in fatty acids and omega 3 as well as natural astaxanthin content of 20 mg / kg.
As you know, the discus eat in the nature plankton on many and varied forms. As you may read in the tome 1 Bleher's discus, the stomach examinations of discus collected in nature contain a certain amount of plankton.
In the aquaculture universe, studies have demonstrated the virtues of plankton Calanus.
Used on fry, the addition of plankton calanus in rations resulted in grow rates 100% higher, tolerances to stresses (handling, captivity…) , 3.5 times higher. Best fish pigmentation, but also better rates of survival on early stages. (fry)
In addition, the essential fatty acid content is also higher than the artemias nauplii and rotifers.
Plankton pur to feed my discus
With so many arguments in his favour, I of course very quickly tested this food on my discus…
Having at this moment good size fishes, my choice fell on the M size of JBL Plankton Pur.
Made up of 95% of Calanus finmarchicus and 5% of Calanus helgalandicus it is suitable for fish from 4 to 14 cm.
As any new food proposed, my discus put some time to adapt.
But as you can see in the video made by JBL Aquaristik the appetence of this food is rather good.
The video made by the team JBL
Plankton pur will be in my opinion a very good food supplement to feed young individuals. I also noticed that the food was more rapidly accepted by the discus of 6/8 cm.
2 to 3 distributions per week alternating with other supplements food seems to be for me a good rate.
My discus gradually appreciate this new food
If you want to try this food, be aware that JBL offers samples so that you can test Plankton pur. Integrated in a beautiful explanatory notebook, ask in your favorite store!
Furthermore, If you want to read the interview with Dr. Nils T. on the site specifically created for JBL pure Plankton (Available in 4 languages)
Your feedback will be welcome here, and I would like to finish by thanking the company JBL for the photo credit.

It may be possible to feed the FRY of discus in replacement of nauplii of Artemia live with plankton pure jbl
Good evening,
Honestly, I think that this food will be a good complement to Artemia (just as it is used in aquaculture). A point is to be taken into account is the cost of this food…
To be entitled to the benefits of the Calanus, a complement to the brine is enough.
From a practical point of view, the food remains interresting.

Hello to you,
Since the time that I go to Amazon it is a pity that this kind of company, not be interested in the periphyton in natural version,It contains many elements to follow.
It will be nice a Arvert (Championship of France 2014) with imminent specialists to observe the various documents filmed that I will circulate on the discus in his biotope and the peryphyton. a title the pororoca: Virgin of any operating aquarium in this place, the discus or the current dance between the rays of the Sun.
If time permits with the organizers it will be possible to watch the last championship of Singapore,This is what will put the water has the mouth.
Good evening,
I do not think that there is no interest to periphyton…
It is simply a food source too complicated to collect the "industrial" scale to be exploited.
It is true that this food source, well known to farmers using extensive systems present some interest.
It will be nice to see this in Arvert.
